Everyday Styles
The bras you'll reach for most — designed for comfort, support, and versatility under everyday clothing.
🔵
T-shirt bra (moulded cup)
The most popular everyday bra. Smooth, seamless moulded cups that disappear under fitted tops. Usually lightly padded with no visible seams on the outside. The workhorse of most women's wardrobes — reliable but not very exciting.
Suits: A–E cup
Wear under: T-shirts, fitted tops, knitwear, work shirts
Avoid: low necklines, sheer fabrics
Limitation: Moulded cups don't adapt to breast shape — they impose a shape instead. If cups wrinkle or look "boxy", the style doesn't suit your shape. Try a seamed bra instead.
🌸
Balconette bra (balcony)
Wide, horizontal cups that sit low across the bust — covering roughly the lower two-thirds of the breast. Creates a lifted, rounded shape with visible décolletage. Straps sit wide on the shoulders. One of the most flattering shapes for fuller busts.
Suits: B–G cup, wide-set breasts, full-on-bottom shape
Wear under: scoop necks, wide necklines, off-shoulder tops
Avoid: narrow necklines, visible straps won't work here
Watch for: Gaping at the top of the cup is common in balconette styles for full-on-top breasts. If this happens, try a full-cup style instead.
💎
Full-cup bra (full coverage)
Cups that fully enclose the breast — no spillage, no exposure. Usually seamed rather than moulded. Provides maximum support and coverage, and is typically the most comfortable style for larger cup sizes (D+). Less emphasis on décolletage, more on containment and comfort.
Suits: D cup and above, pendulous or close-set breasts
Wear under: work wear, formal shirts, high necklines, everyday
Avoid: anything low-cut or with a wide neckline
Best for: Larger cup sizes who prioritise support and all-day comfort over aesthetics. Brands like Freya, Panache, and Elomi make full-cup bras up to K cup and beyond.
🔶
Demi bra (quarter cup)
Similar to a balconette but with even lower cups — covering only the lower half of the breast. Creates significant cleavage and a pushed-up shape. The cups angle the breasts inward. More dramatic than a balconette; less practical for everyday use.
Suits: A–D cup, round or evenly shaped breasts
Wear under: lower necklines, date-night tops, evening wear
Avoid: D cup and above (usually insufficient support)
Note: Demi bras provide less support than full-cup or balconette styles. Not ideal for extended wear or larger bust sizes.
Shape & Lift
Bras designed to create a specific silhouette — more cleavage, more projection, or more uplift.
💫
Plunge bra
A very low centre gore (the panel between the cups) with angled cups that push the breasts inward and upward. Designed to stay hidden under deep V-necks and plunge necklines. Usually underwired. The low centre is the defining feature — some plunge bras have minimal padding, others have significant push-up.
Suits: A–F cup, widely-spaced breasts
Wear under: plunge necklines, V-necks, wrap dresses, blazers
Avoid: high necklines where the low centre is visible
If the centre gore won't lie flat: The cup is too small — the underwires are being pushed apart by breast tissue. Go up one cup size.
⬆️
Push-up bra
Padding at the bottom and sides of each cup pushes breast tissue upward and inward, creating cleavage and the illusion of a larger cup size. Push-up levels range from level 1 (subtle lift) to level 3 (maximum cleavage). Not designed for all-day support — more for specific occasions.
Suits: A–C cup looking for more cleavage
Wear under: evening wear, occasion outfits, low necklines
Avoid: D cup and above — usually creates discomfort, not cleavage
Sizing note: Because padding adds volume, size down one cup when buying a push-up bra if you want the same overall silhouette.
🏆
Minimiser bra
Designed to redistribute breast tissue to make the bust appear smaller and flatter. Full cups that spread tissue to the sides rather than projecting forward. Useful under fitted or structured tops where projection is unwanted. Not about losing volume — about redistributing it.
Suits: D cup and above, full or projected breasts
Wear under: structured blazers, formal shirts, tailored clothing
Avoid: anything you want cleavage in
Good for: Reducing visible projection under work shirts, suit jackets, or formal clothing without changing actual size.
Comfort-First Styles
Wire-free options that prioritise ease of wear — not necessarily less supportive, just differently structured.
🌿
Bralette
A wire-free, lightly structured bra — usually made from soft lace, jersey, or modal. Minimal padding, no rigid structure. The opposite of a moulded cup bra. Prioritises comfort and aesthetics (they're designed to be seen — under sheer tops, peeking above a neckline). Very popular for loungewear and casual wear.
Suits: A–C cup (most bralettes), some D-cup styles exist
Wear under: oversized tops, sheer fabrics, casual clothing, at home
Avoid: D+ without a specifically designed bralette; formal or athletic use
D cup+: Bralettes from regular brands rarely work above C cup. Seek out brands like Elomi, Panache, or Curvy Kate for wire-free bras with proper support for fuller cups. Our
plus size guide has a full brand directory.
🤍
Wire-free / non-wired bra
A structured bra without underwire — more support than a bralette but without metal. Uses wide bands, thick fabric, and strategic seaming to provide lift and containment. Best option for those with underwire sensitivity, skin conditions, or post-surgery recovery. Not a compromise — well-made wire-free bras are excellent for everyday use.
Suits: all cup sizes — brands like Elomi make wire-free to K cup
Wear under: everyday clothing, casual wear, work from home
Avoid: anything requiring a very specific silhouette
Post-surgery: Wire-free bras are often recommended after breast augmentation, reduction, or mastectomy. Always follow your surgeon's guidance.
Occasion Styles
Bras built for specific clothing situations — strapless dresses, backless tops, sheer fabric, and more.
✨
Strapless bra
A bra with removable or no straps, designed to stay in place through band grip alone. The band must fit very well — a loose strapless bra will slide down. Most strapless bras have silicone grip strips inside the band. Some convert to multiway styles with repositionable straps.
Suits: A–F cup (strapless support drops significantly above F)
Wear under: strapless dresses, off-shoulder tops, tube tops
Avoid: wearing all day without straps above D cup — fatigue sets in
Key: Go down a band size from your usual size for strapless — the extra grip compensates. A 34C would try a 32C strapless.
🎗️
Multiway / convertible bra
A bra with removable, repositionable straps that can be worn in multiple configurations: standard, halter, racerback, criss-cross, or strapless. A practical wardrobe staple for anyone who wears a variety of necklines. Support level varies widely between brands — treat them as versatile everyday bras, not high-performance options.
Suits: A–E cup
Wear under: almost any neckline depending on configuration
Avoid: expecting the same support as a dedicated fixed-strap bra
Best use: Packing for travel (one bra, multiple necklines) and transitional outfits where you're changing from day to evening looks.
🦋
Bandeau bra
A horizontal band of fabric that wraps around the chest — no cups, no straps, no underwire. Minimal structure. Can be worn as a visible top layer or under tops with wide necklines. Provides very little support — more about coverage and style than function.
Suits: A–B cup only for support; any size as a layering piece
Wear under: loose tops, as a crop top, under sheer layers
Avoid: any activity, C cup and above as primary support
Style tip: Bandeaus are excellent visible layering pieces — a lace bandeau under a sheer blouse or oversized shirt is a popular styling choice.
🌙
Adhesive / stick-on bra
Self-adhesive cups that stick directly to the skin — no straps, no band, no back closure. For use under backless, strapless, or very low-cut clothing where no conventional bra will work. Usually made from silicone. Reusable with careful washing. Lift is minimal — primarily for coverage and nipple concealment.
Suits: A–C cup reliably; D cup possible with specific brands
Wear under: backless dresses, plunging tops, swimwear cover-ups
Avoid: D cup and above for support; not suitable for all-day wear
Tip: Apply to clean, dry, lotion-free skin for best adhesion. Remove slowly to avoid skin irritation. Never use on broken or sensitive skin.

Guide by Breast Shape
Cup size matters less than breast shape when choosing a bra style. Two women with the same size can need completely different styles. Not sure how to identify your breast shape? Our bra fitting guide covers this.
| Breast shape | Best styles | Styles to avoid |
| Round / projected | T-shirt, balconette, plunge | Balconette can gap at top — try plunge or full-cup |
| Full on top | Full-cup, plunge, balconette with high coverage | Low balconette — will gap or spill at top |
| Full on bottom | Balconette, push-up, demi | Full-cup can flatten the shape |
| Wide-set (gap between) | Plunge, push-up — bring breasts together | Balconette — widens the set further |
| Close-set (little gap) | Balconette, demi — maintain separation | Plunge or push-up — may cause discomfort |
| Asymmetrical | Unlined seamed cups — moulded cups can look uneven | Very structured moulded T-shirt bras |
| Pendulous / low | Full-cup seamed, minimiser, wire-free with wide band | Bandeau, bralette, or very shallow cups |
| Tubular / narrow | Push-up, plunge with side support | Wide balconette cups — won't fill correctly |
The most useful thing you can do is identify your breast shape before buying — not just your size. A D cup can be round, projected, full-on-top, wide-set, or pendulous, and each of those shapes needs a different style. Use our
fitting guide if you're not sure how to assess your shape.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the most comfortable everyday bra style?
This depends on cup size and personal preference. For A–C cups, many women find bralettes or soft-cup T-shirt bras most comfortable. For D cup and above, a well-fitted underwired full-cup or balconette bra usually provides the best all-day comfort — it does more work so you feel less strain. Wire-free structured bras are another excellent option for all sizes.
Is a plunge bra the same as a push-up bra?
No — these are different features that sometimes appear together. A plunge refers to the low centre gore (low between the cups), which keeps the bra hidden under low necklines. A push-up refers to padding at the base and sides of the cup that creates cleavage. A bra can be a plunge without being a push-up, and vice versa. Many plunge bras are lightly padded but not aggressively push-up.
Can I wear a balconette bra if I have a large cup size?
Yes, and many women with D–G cups prefer balconette styles. The key is finding brands that make balconettes in extended sizes — Freya, Curvy Kate, Panache, and Elomi all make balconettes up to K cup. The shape works particularly well for full-on-bottom or evenly round breasts. If you get gaping at the top, your breasts are likely full-on-top — try a different style.
How many bras do I actually need?
A practical minimum is 3–4: one everyday T-shirt bra, one supportive everyday alternative (balconette or full-cup), one strapless or multiway for occasion wear, and one sports bra matched to your most intense exercise. Beyond that depends on your wardrobe and lifestyle.
